Microsoft launched a chat service enabling companies to utilize on-demand AI agents for everyday tasks, relying on the pay-as-you-go approach to boost the uptake of this technology. The complimentary service, Copilot Chat, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4, enables users to design AI agents with natural languages like English and Mandarin for purposes like market analysis, drafting strategy papers, and getting ready for meetings.

Nonetheless, functions such as summarizing and transcribing Teams calls, as well as generating PowerPoint slides, necessitate a $30 monthly subscription to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft, similar to other major tech firms, faces pressure to deliver returns on its substantial investments in AI, with the software giant planning to spend roughly $80 billion in its current fiscal year on AI infrastructure and data centers. Following a Gartner report last year that questioned the adoption of Copilot, Microsoft has been promoting its use.

In November, Microsoft started permitting customers to develop autonomous agents needing little human involvement, a tactic that some analysts suggest might provide tech firms an easier route to making money.
