Meta and IT ministry Team up to establish Centre for Generative AI

Meta, a worldwide social media corporation, has revealed a collaboration with the ministry of electronics and information technology to establish a Centre for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to the ministry. The IT ministry announced that the Centre for Generative AI, which will be established at the Indian Institute of Jodhpur, aims to promote open-source AI development in India.

“The partnership will enable development of indigenous AI applications, advance skill development in AI, boost research capabilities with the aim of contributing to India’s AI mission of ensuring tech sovereignty and the vision of building AI solutions that are tailor made for India,” IT ministry said.

S Krishnan, the secretary of the IT ministry, stressed the importance of initiatives that promote collaboration between the government, industry, and academia to establish an environment for new research, skill improvement, and open-source innovation in AI.

“The initiative will support India's ambitious goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by equipping the nation's youth to lead in the global AI arena, securing India's position as a leader in technological advancement and economic growth,” he said.

Meta has promised to allocate Rs 7.5 crore in funding for the establishment of the Centre for Generative AI at IIT Jodhpur within the next three years. The company stated that the center will equip future researchers, students, and practitioners with the necessary knowledge and tools for responsibly developing and implementing GenAI technologies.
