The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a telecom research and development center under DoT, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and IIT Mandi to develop 'Cell-Free' 6G Access Points.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will increase efforts to create domestic technology in the 6G telecommunications sector.

The main goal of this 6G project is to create APs that will support the future 6G radio access networks, while also contributing to standardization efforts, promoting commercialization, creating intellectual property rights, and building a skilled workforce for the growing 6G industry.

This program will provide funding and assistance to Indian companies, startups, universities, and research institutions engaged in designing, developing, and bringing telecommunication products and solutions to market.

This plan is designed to make inexpensive broadband and mobile services more accessible, with the goal of reducing the digital gap in India. According to the Ministry, the deal is included in the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) program of the Department of Telecommunications. Conventional mobile networks utilize cellular structures where each cell is supported by a solitary base station such as 4G/5G for providing services to mobile users.

'Cell-Free' Massive MIMO eliminates the concept of cells and cell boundaries by placing multiple access points (APs) across a wide area to cater to numerous user devices concurrently. Many APs are assigned to each user in their coverage zone, allowing multiple APs to support a single user.
