| | June 20188CIOReviewWHEN THE CLOUD IS SWAMPED, IT'S EDGE COMPUTINGhere is a lot of buzz around Edge Computing today but the way I see it, people are still trying to understand this space and it is still evolving. It is largely governed and determined by consumer behaviour by consumer behaviour I mean IoT.Now with technology revolving around changing consumer behaviours, consumers are getting exposed to newer technologies and their adoption of technol-ogy determines how much the technology is going to be used and how it is going to be used. Given this sce-nario, when we talk about IoT and how the consumers are going to adopt it in different countries and regions will depend on the kind of infrastructures available therebased on which people are going to adopt it dif-ferently and in the time and pace which allows them to do so.So, when we talk about Edge Computing, which basically means you are trying to compute away from a centralised point near the source of data generation. In this context, what I see is that, you will have more and more networks which are coming closer and compute capacities coming closer to the consumer. Having said that, in terms of real-time or real life practical scenari-os, let us look at multiple condominiums in Gurgaon. Each condominium will be accommodating 500-1000 flats. Now, when you look at IoT, you can see10-20 devices per flat that are connected on IoT in each and every flat. In all, you are looking at more than 5000 devices in a condominium. The day is not far when you will have a micro data centre or a mini computer centre T IN MY OPINIONBy Sanjay Motwani, Regional Director, Asia Pacific, Raritan-A brand of LegrandSanjay has over 25 years of experience in Sales, Marketing, and General Management.
