Digitization has greatly transformed how the shipping industry operates, making it easy for business owners to improvise their shipping systems by making use of the newest innovations in data science and AI. With the help of data science, shipping companies can:· Compare past data for better efficiency· Streamline supply chain operations· Analyze performance indicators · Test new business models· Optimize profit-making strategies· Improve decision-makingArtificial Intelligence has a number of practical use cases that shipping organizations are adopting into their daily routines. Retail shipping companies are making use of AI and data science to offer faster delivery options and compete against other businesses. Data Science and its Impact on the Shipping IndustryAI-powered machines like Google's AlphaGO and IBM Deep Blue are two of the most popular reactive machines that are used in the shipping industry. They make use of weather records, movement of other shipping vessels and other data to indicate the best sailing routes to shipping companies. Enabling such intricate decision-making can lead to autonomous ships becoming more popular over time. There are startups that are working on remote command systems and autonomous ships that are on par with ice-class containers. While they are not fully autonomous ships and do require some form of human control, we are moving in the direction of self-steering vehicles. The shipping industry can expect a self-driving system similar to the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems that are seen in smart cars. However, this dream is far-fetched as of now. It is neither immediate nor will it come into play in the nearest future. We need to take our time to reach the point where IN MY OPINIONTNishant Dalmia, CTO
