The British put transmitters on planes, which received signals from radar stations on the ground and broadcasted a signal back to identify the aircraft, thus, creating the first RFID system. Pretty morbid circumstances for the introduction of a technology so dense. Nevertheless, from Aerospace to logistics to football, RFID tracking systems have climbed a very strong and complex level, leaving users with incredible advantages. Improved data accuracy, faster data collection, improved inventory/asset tracking, and reduced labor costs are just a few of the many improvements that RFID generates. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited leveraged IBM's technology expertise to deploy an end-to-end tracking solution based on RFID technology at HPCL's Nashik plant. The USD 2.2million deal was one of the single largest implementations in India for RFID-based tracking solutions and involved infrastructure services, business consulting services and middleware solutions from IBM. This was in 2010. 5 years later on 1st July, 2016, Jawaharlal Nehru Port becomes the first port in the country to implement logistics data tagging of containers. The port implemented the logistics data bank tagging of containers, first of its kind facility, intended to help importers/exporters track their goods in transit through logistics data bank service. For the last couple of years, the Indian technology industry has been touting the next year as `The Year of RFID'. However, this `next' year gets postponed to the next year. The industry as a whole needs to discuss and elaborate on reasons why RFID has yet to meet the unrealistic `hockey stick' predictions included in investor pitches and footer-notes to quarterly market updates. The reality is that there never has been and never will be a hockey stick-like uptick in this industry. The RFID community is incredibly creative, ambitious and insanely entrepreneurial. In this edition of CIOReview India, we focus on the Indian segment of the RFID technology vendors who show tremendous potential. Our cover feature ATID Systems has been a premier manufacturer of RFID Handheld Readers to the Indian market for quite some time now. The rest of the top 20 most promising RFID technology solution providers are doing their bit, serving every vertical. Let's see if the next year is `the' year indeed.Do let us know what you think.Emmanuel Christi DasAsst. Managing Editoremmanuel@cioreviewindia.comRFID- Why is it Still an Alien Technology?
