| |November 20194EditorialSmart cities market is growing rapidly owing to the number of broad ICT trends that are enabling key segments, such as energy, transportation, and urban planning, to adopt new technologies to deliver smart solutions to cities and citizens. Cities are implementing smart city applications looking to improve efficiency, reduce costs, generate new sources of revenue, and most importantly, improve the lives of their citizens. By planning ahead, using creative funding approaches, and converging networks around citywide fibre rollouts, cities will move forward on the path to becoming smarter in 2020. For instance, it is being expected that by 2025, cities that deploy smart-mobility applications have the potential to cut commuting times by 15 to 20 percent on average, with some people enjoying even larger reductions. However, the potential associated with each application is highly variable, depending on each city's density, existing transit infrastructure, and commuting patterns. In a dense city with extensive transit, smart technologies could save the average commuter almost 15 minutes a day. Hence, smart city applications are enriching the lives of resi-dents and making governments more efficient in responding to citizens' needs. From security and convenience to revenue gen-eration, smart city applications are changing the way cities oper-ate and the way we live and work. It all starts with connectivity - smart city residents, vehicles, systems and applications must be connected, and this involves robust fiber infrastructure in all cases. What is more, 5G will foster new smart city applications like parking, smart meters, public safety, traffic management, 5G small cell densification, waste management, and coordination of departments for emergency services.
