| |February 20174CIOReviewEditorialEditorialTheoretically speaking, UC platforms provide businesses access to a variety of integrated features and applications stemming from a singular platform. However, despite its name, most UC solutions available in the market today are anything but unified. Companies are constantly striving to ease this predicament as they try to make simplified easy to use systems. Clients expect collaborative tools such as video conference calls, chats and real time presence from their UC systems. Integration needs to be closely followed along with collaboration tools and should be made an essential part of the service for a good performing UC engine. Along with good integration capabilities, clients demand remote collaboration where anytime, anywhere connectivity is a necessity. As the virtual workforce grows, video conferencing calls and document sharing is poised to become increasingly important. A reliable UC system thus helps users stay connected and enables on the go connectivity. CIOs realize that Unified communications is still an emerging trend that has no clear cut business owner or a direct support team. In order to reap its benefits, the management needs to ensure that proper implementation and training is provided. A solution is only as good as the purpose behind it hence the right mechanisms in place, with the right strategy, can support the overall cause of the organization. To counteract tight budgets, CIOs move towards cloud-based UC applications that allows the IT teams do away with capital expenditure and move to an operational cost model. Another benefit of the Cloud SaaS UC model is it pushes service costs directly to a specific line of business. However, Cloud UC is not the best solution for all organizations, the bigger the employee count, the more expensive is the solution compared to an on premise UC solution. The downfall of cloud UC is that the customization capabilities offered might be minimal, along with security regulations that might not comply with the policies of the company. The solution might lie in deploying a mix of cloud and on premise UC applications. But the CIO has to take a call regarding the middleware to be used to integrate them all into one platform. Although this might pose complexities in the short term, they are much more cost effective than integrating cloud solutions from multiple vendors. Do let us know what you think.
