A Quarter Billion Connected Vehicles Will Come into Existence by 2020: Gartner

STAMFORD, CT: A quarter billion connected vehicles will be on the road by 2020 equipped with automated driving capabilities and paving for new in-vehicle services, predicts Gartner. Referring to the adoption of IoT application across the globe, Gartner forecasts that 4.9 billion connected things will be in action in 2015 and this number will go up to 25 billion by 2020. “The connected car is already a reality, and in-vehicle wireless connectivity is rapidly expanding from luxury models and premium brands, to high-volume midmarket models,” says James F. Hines, Research Director at Gartner. Advanced technology facilitates and supports the need for more sophisticated infotainment systems for the automotive industry. This can be achieved through advanced graphics accelerators, displays, application processors and human-machine interfaces. In 2020, it is expected to have more than 50 million connected vehicles out of which, one out of five vehicles will possess wireless network. This increase in connected vehicles will accelerate telematics, mobility services automated driving, and infotainment inside the vehicles. “Many standards and ecosystems for the IoT are still in development and some of the vendors and ecosystems may fail during the working lifetime of current IoT projects,” says Alfonso Velosa, Research Director, Gartner. This needs an efficient future proofing strategy for products. IoT projects will be future proofed through gateway-based architecture.
