Amid Apple's ongoing struggles with its AI division, the company has now decided to delay the apparently coming updates for Siri for further undetermined time. These features revealed at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference would let Siri access personal data to provide more accurate responses, and improved app control, and would have gone live with the iOS 18.4 update this April.

However, Apple now says it will instead release some of these capabilities "the coming year." The company has been reportedly running into ongoing issues with its development. Even though engineers in the team were able to identify and fix some critical bugs, some insiders do maintain that the features won't go live until next year at the earliest.

Some within AI have begun to raise internal concerns, with others reportedly unsatisfied with how the features performed during personal tests, led by software chief Craig Federighi. There is a growing fear that it may be necessary to scrap the work and start over, which would push abilities forward for Siri to at least 2026.

In fact, this delaying in the AI rollout for Apple is especially embarrassing given their strong processes in marketing. Advertisements for the iPhone 16 likely stated it was "built for the ground up for Apple Intelligence," yet core features may not likely emerge until months after the release of the iPhone 17. AppleCare staff have instead been instructed to tell customers that the updates for Siri will now be available in "the coming year."

Internal sources also mention worries that implementing Siri enhancements may actually require the use of more powerful AI models, creating stress on the hardware available currently. As a result, this may force Apple to do one of two things such as to curtail features and throttle device performance on aging models.

Further hardware upgrades may also be required to execute all possibilities. While minor refinements to Siri were introduced recently, including the integration of ChatGPT and a new interface, they do not signify fundamental AI advancements. Meanwhile, competitors like Amazon, Google, and Samsung zealously forge ahead with advanced AI features.
