Bharti Airtel Starts Ultra Fast 4G services in Andamans

Bharti Airtel Ltd has now become the first private telco to provide high-speed 4G services across the islands. With the commissioning of submarine optical cable fibre project, the telco on Monday launched its ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 

To support this, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India had launched the undersea cable project to connect Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Chennai which will significantly boost 4G services across the islands. Following the national security issue between India-China tensions, the project which amounts to about INR 1,224 crore - an underwater project. 

Sunil Mittal, chairman, Bharti Airtel, “The new fiber link marks a major milestone in India’s digital transformation journey as this critical infrastructure reaches the strategic archipelago. We are grateful to the Prime Minister for taking the time to launch this key digital infrastructure." 

The Prime Minister has also said that besides national security, this project is expected to improve internet connectivity across the islands which will help in better functioning of every operation across the islands. This will enable the people living there and visiting there to use crucial services including netbanking, online education, e-commerce and telemedicine facilities. This will further boost tourism and create more jobs which will ultimately aid in building a better economy in the islands. 

Airtel said in a statement, “It (Airtel) was the first private operator to launch mobile services in the islands. With today’s launch of ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ network, Airtel looks forward to further strengthening its bond with customers on the islands. This undersea cable is said to cover seven islands across Andaman geography and will be about 2,313 kilometers.”
