In the first quarter of this year, shipments of cellular IoT module chipsets increased by 35% year over year, with Qualcomm dominating the industry with a 42% share and 30% growth in nine of the 10 major worldwide countries.

According to Counterpoint Research, China was the main market for cellular IoT module chipsets during the quarter. The top three uses for 5G were for PC, router/CPE, and industrial.

"Qualcomm, UNISOC and ASR held the top three positions in the global cellular IoT module chipset market in Q1 2022, accounting for nearly 75 per cent of the total shipments," said research analyst Anish Khajuria.

With a focus on premium 4G and 5G solutions for industries including retail, automotive, industrial robots, and smart cities, Qualcomm has been expanding the range of IoT chipsets it offers.

The report noted that it is also working with a number of industry application and technology providers, including as Microsoft, ZTE, BMW, and Bosch, to concentrate on high-value AI and 5G IoT capabilities, also known as the 5G AIoT segment.

"The cellular modem chipset competition is heating up in the IoT module space with a growing number of players entering the higher-volume LPWA and lower-category 4G LTE (Cat 1 and Cat 1 bis) segments," said Vice President Research, Neil Shah.

"However, the low-power and less advanced applications will continue to prevail into the next decade and we could see some adoption of SoC-based integrated solutions, Shah added.
