SK HynixSK Hynix, South Korean chipmaker launched the world’s first Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) DRAM on Tuesday. SK Hynix is interested in expanding its presence with the next-gen memory product.

SK Hynix’s 16GB DDR5 DRAM, developed using 1Ynm process technology, is available in the market after passing through the requisite verification and compatibility tests (source – Yonhap news agency).

A next-gen DRAM, DDR5 is a standard technology, built for fast speed and high density, alongside reducing the power consumption compared to DDR4.

DDR5 DRAM is optimized for using data-intensive applications like big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

DDR5 DRAM supports transfer rates of 4,800 – 5,600 megabit-per-second (Mbps), which is 1.8 times faster than the previous-gen DDR4.

Operating at 1.1 volts, from 1.2 of DDR4, DDR5 DRAM consumes less power.

SK Hynix said, “DDR5 DRAM has advanced error-correcting code (ECC) inside the chip that can correct 1-bit-level errors by itself, boosting the reliability of applications by 20 times. Its DDR5 DRAM could also build up to 256 gigabyte capacity with through-silicon via technology.”

Oh Jong-Hoon, Chief Marketing Officer, said, “We will focus on the fast-growing premium server market, solidifying its position as a leading company in server DRAM."

SK Hynix said, “We have been collaborating closely with its global partners, including Intel to launch its DDR5 DRAM.”

Conducting a joint operation of onsite labs, system-level tests and simulations with system-on-chip manufacturers, SK Hynix is verifying the functions of the product.

Carolyn Duran, Vice President, Intel's Data Platforms Group, said, "We worked collaboratively with SK Hynix on silicon development by designing and testing prototypes to ensure DDR5 meets its performance goals and are fully ready for our mutual customers.”

As per the market researcher, Omdia, DDR5 requirement is predicted to increase next year and account for 10 percent of the total global DRAM market in 2022 and 43 percent in 2024.

During the second quarter of the year, SK Hynix was the second-largest DRAM producer with a 30.1 percent market share. It was only behind the native rivals Samsung (source TrendForce).
