Ericsson partners with BSNL to deploy 5G in India

BSNLNovember 5, 2018: Ericsson has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with public sector telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to incubate 5G technology in India. Earlier, the company had also signed a MoU with the Bharti Airtel and IIT Delhi.  

The partnership will work on the deployment of 5G technology and IoT across India. Both the companies will be working together on 5G technology regarding developing 5G use cases, sharing knowledge of 5G technology concepts, industry and innovation trends including 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project ) standardization progress. "5G and IoT will bring new opportunities and create new ecosystems and through this association with Ericsson, we intend to take the lead in the development of these new technologies," said Anupam Shrivastava, CMD, BSNL. Moreover, the partnership will help BSNL to nourish Ericsson's 5G Center of Excellence, established at the IIT (Delhi) for the purpose of evaluating the benefits of 5G technology in rural connectivity, connected healthcare, industrial automation, public safety, video surveillance, energy, and agriculture.

Ericsson's study shows that 5G technology has the potential to generate a total revenue of $27.3 billion for the Indian telecom operators by 2026. "There are large opportunities in sectors like manufacturing, energy, and utilities followed by public safety and health sectors. This will be over and above the revenue generated from traditional services, which is expected to grow up to $63 billion by 2026," said Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India.

Earlier, the global telecom company announced the deployment of new radio products and software solutions for local providers in India to expand its end-to-end 5G platform. According to the company's statement, the hardware and software will help the local providers to deploy 5G technology easily. Ericsson has invested about $4 billion towards R&D in 2016. And, it has recently raised $370 million to invest in 5G research – that includes further developing of 5G and other mobile innovations.
