smash.gg, an online video game events platform, announced that it has entered in an acquisition agreement with Microsoft. smash.gg`, which hosts and supports esports events, reportedly looks for joining Redmond for an undisclosed amount, which will further bolster its gaming presence alongside the Xbox brand. This was announced by Smash.gg in its official website. Smash.gg reached out to Microsoft for confirmation, however, it did not immediately respond to the requests for comment.
smash.gg is headquartered in San Francisco, which started operations in 2015, is a platform for esports events like Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. fighting series. Its services expanded to other titles, although its name and presence remained undisclosed to the fighting genre. The suite of tools offers support to grassroots and professional organizers, handling management, payments, and analytics including inclusive platform.
A statement released by smash.gg says, "Since we started in 2015, our goal has been to build active esports scenes around the games people love to play. Today we're excited to take the next step in that journey by joining Microsoft to help strengthen our existing relationships and explore new opportunities. smash.gg will continue as a self-service esports platform available to tournament organizers from all game communities. Microsoft has also confirmed the news through its MSN Esports Twitter account, where it stated to bring further opportunities for the company.
It seems an unexpected acquisition for Microsoft, with smash.gg, renowned for Super Smash Bros. communities, even down its brand identity. Expanding steadily for more than half a decade, the acquisition signals further diversifies with its services, stressing availability across – “all game communities”.
Microsoft has the ability for bringing smash.gg to new audiences, whether the Xbox platform, its MSN eSports franchise, or even backend developer tools like Playfab.
Microsoft has good gaming market presence, with its Xbox platform a pivotal division in its gaming efforts. But it also finds resentment in some gaming communities, following its decision for shuttering its Mixer live streaming platform in earlier 2020.
smash.gg, with its natural progression, the where the company previously suggested “lots of conversations” were taking place for maintaining growth during the closure rumors. It included – “talks about acquisition or combination with services". Now, Microsoft is considered an ideal partner, for saving the platform, and placing it in the spotlight alongside its broader gaming channel.
