According to sources, the total number of 5G smartphone shipments is anticipated to surpass 100 million in the second quarter (Q2) of 2019 and surpass 4G smartphone shipments by the end of 2023.
From 4% in 2021 to 14% in 2022, 5G share in lower price bands (less than Rs 20,000) is gradually rising.
"It is expected to reach 30 per cent in 2023. The cost of an entry-level 5G smartphone came down to below Rs 10,000 in 2022 with the launch of the Lava Blaze 5G," according to Counterpoint Research.
Sources claim that the commercial rollout of 5G services has increased demand for the same, while the availability of less expensive 5G chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek has allowed OEMs to introduce more 5G devices in the lower price range.
The expected growth in 5G smartphone shipments in 2022 is 81% (on-year), driven by the devices' increasing availability in lower price bands (under Rs 20,000) and the deployment of 5G networks.
But due to component supply constraints, inflation, geopolitical unrest, and other macroeconomic problems, which have postponed the introduction of 5G devices in the entry-level market, the expansion in this area has been constrained.
OEMs have increased the number of 5G devices they are offering in lower price ranges, but in order to mitigate the effects of rising component costs, they have done so by eliminating or downgrading other important functions like display or rapid charging.
"We expect these constraints to ease by the end of 2023, leading to the mass adoption of 5G. Better availability of networks in major areas will also facilitate 5G smartphone growth in 2023, which is estimated to be 62 per cent YoY," according to sources.
According to the report, 5G has been a driving factor and will do so in 2023 as well.
