In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) is disrupting various sectors, India is taking deliberate steps to position itself within the AI ecosystem. The country's strategy relies on a cohesive method that enhances the complete AI stack—from semiconductor manufacturing and data center infrastructure to core models and energy management—driven by a focus on nuclear power.

In a recent meeting at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar emphasized India's historical position as a global technology provider.

India aims to establish a strong AI infrastructure, including semiconductor manufacturing plants to enhance national security and varied supply chains, establishing itself as a reliable participant in the worldwide semiconductor sector.

Recently, India intends to allocate funds for creating affordable, sovereign large language models (LLMs).

One of the initiatives revealed in the Union Budget for 2025-2026 is the intention to set aside Rs 20,000 crore for the research and development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and to significantly boost India's nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

AI needs large quantities of computing power, which consequently necessitates dependable and affordable energy. Nuclear power is SEEN as the perfect solution to meet AI's computing and data center requirements.

Ongoing investments in enhancing India's nuclear technology are anticipated to deliver strong and sustainable energy for AI infrastructure, ensuring the nation remains competitive in the AI contest.
