India Must Develop Sovereign AI Infra Says Arvind Krishna

As per Arvind Krishna, chairman and CEO of IBM, every nation, including India, has to have autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, including massive language models. At a restricted media conference, Krishna, who was in the nation for the B20 meeting, said that IBM has urged the Indian government establish a national AI computing center.
 
“We had a very good conversation with (Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology) Rajeev Chandrasekhar. I believe every country ought to have some sovereign capability on AI, including large language models,” said Krishna.
 
India must build a computational and data infrastructure in this regard, he continued.
 
“You need such an infrastructure as you may want to use it for purposes the rest of the world may not want to invest in. You may want to use it for a purpose that you may not want to expose to others.”
 
“You also need a way for the government and private companies to be able to leverage that in a way that is unique for India,” he added.
 
When asked if the government would need to make significant investments, he responded that it would not be difficult for India to raise a few hundreds of millions of dollars for such a project. Those who claim investments of $10 billion are simply delusional, according to Krishna.
 
He said that when it comes to the adoption of emerging technology, the private sector gains confidence from the government taking the lead. Krishna radiated assurance that, like with BPO and IT services, India will effectively ride the AI wave.
