India is expected to have over 900 million internet users in 2025, largely from the countryside, according to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and research company Kantar. Nonetheless, the increase in the number of internet users has diminished since 2021. In 2024, the increase in internet users in India was 10%, while it was 11% in 2023 and 14% in 2022.
By the end of 2024, the nation recorded 886 million internet users, indicating a 58% penetration rate. In 2021, rural India overtook urban India in the number of internet users, and the count in rural areas has been increasing swiftly since that time.
In 2024, 55% of internet users in India were from rural areas. The report indicated that individuals are averaging 90 minutes each day on the internet. In this instance, urban users allocate 94 minutes each day to internet access, which is comparatively more than rural users, who spend 89 minutes online daily.
Utilizing over-the-top (OTT) video and audio streaming applications has emerged as the primary use case in India for internet users, overtaking digital communication (chats, emails, messages) and social networks. In 2024, 732 million individuals utilized OTT applications, with 54% originating from rural regions and merely 15% from the country's nine largest cities.
