By 2025, Microsoft and the international communications firm Viasat want to provide satellite internet connectivity to 10 million people worldwide.
According to a blog post published by Microsoft on Wednesday, Viasat is the first satellite partner to collaborate with the company's Airband Initiative. The two of them will further Airband's work.
A third of the world's population, or 2.7 billion people, have never utilised the internet, according to the International Telecommunication Union at the UN.
"We will deploy satellite technology in partnership with Viasat to connect isolated places that previously had few, if any, alternatives for traditional connectivity. Together, we will be able to develop and grow Airband's reach quickly, looking into a larger project pipeline and additional nations where we haven't yet worked, "said Teresa Hutson, Microsoft's vice president of corporate responsibility and technology.
The businesses will supply and test a variety of technologies, such as fixed wireless and satellites (both in geostationary orbit and low earth orbit).
