Ministry Of Electronics & IT Collaborates With IBM To Enhance Employability

Today, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IBM India announced a partnership for creating a robust education and skilling ecosystem for creating critical thinkers, problem solvers, next-gen innovators via the Common Services Centre Academy – which is a part of Common Service Centre (CSC) scheme of the Indian Government’s flagship Digital India program and IBM, alongside with their implementation partners of CSR Box, Uva Jagriti Sansthan, and Jeevitam is going to foster the capability and the development of learners from diverse backgrounds and educational requirements. With extensive use of technology, teaching and delivery of specialized courses/training programmes in the fields of Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for training learners at village level entrepreneurship division, functionaries and stakeholders of the CSC programme.

As a collaborative part, IBM will craft and provide content from its USP skilling programmes – SkillsBuild and STEM for Girls – which will be used for training services and in community development programmes, which is presently being conducted in the 6000 CSC Academies. The IBM programmes includes courses and project-based learning on various technologies, which include Cloud and AI.

Supporting 3.7 plus lakh common service centres, including 60,000 Women only centres, CSC Academy is planning for setting up 6,000 CSC Academy centres (one in every block), from which 5000 are already spread across India. For making learning experiential, IBM will also be focusing on acquiring the learners involved in trainings, workshops, train-the-trainer programmes and co-create training materials and conduct orientation camps. This programme will be providing employment access to 4000 village residing youth in the identified rural areas.

“The National Education Policy’s focus on experiential learning and skills like critical thinking, problem solving etc are aimed at bridging the skills gap of India’s workforce. This will in turn play a pivotal role in building a skilled workforce for local industries thereby powering the success of GoI’s flagship programs like Make in India, Skill India, Digital India, Startup India etc. This collaboration with IBM aligns with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on learning 21st century skills to ensure the future-readiness of India’s youth and realizing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” said Dr Dinesh Tyagi, Managing Director, CSC e-Governance Services India Limited.

With India moving into the era of post-COVID industry transformation, there is a vast requisite of skilled workforce in the divisions of technologies like computer-aided design, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, image processing, IoT, data science, cloud computing and blockchain.

To make this a reality there is a need to create the right avenues and platforms for learners to be equipped with industry-ready skills. Our collaboration with MeitY and CSC Academy will open up access to deep technological resources and expertise to learners with diverse backgrounds and educational needs and focus on skill upgradation through experiential learning - initiatives aimed at enhancing employability,” said Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/South Asia.

CSC e-Governance Service India Limited is a renowned Special Purpose Vehicle (CSC SPV) of MeitY for monitoring the implementation of CSC Scheme and providing a centralized collaborative framework for delivery of services to citizens through CSCs, in addition to ensuring systematic viability and sustainability of system.

SkillBuild alone has been known for covering 40,000 learners with 110,000 learning hours and 80,000 course completion, since its launch in November 2019 in India. In Year 1, the IBM STEM for Girls, a three-year programme, initially reached 600+ secondary schools and 78,000 girls and 45000 boys. Its goal is attaining advance level of the STEM skills and career prospects of 200,000 girls and 100,000 boys through promotion of digital literacy, coding/tech skills, career development, and girls’ empowerment by 2022.
