MWC Barcelona 2023, MTN Group and Huawei signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance their strategic collaboration in the areas of governance, social issues, and the environment (ESG).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed at a conference hosted by the two parties at MWC Barcelona, is in line with MTN's Ambition 2025 business goal and Huawei's Corporate Sustainable Development (CSD) strategy, which includes its TECH4ALL project.
“Leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress can only be achieved through the power of partnerships,” said MTN Group Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer Nompilo Morafo. “Working with companies like Huawei, we can pool our technologies and expertise to drive greater access to connectivity, digital skills and greener and more sustainable solutions to the benefit of all.”
"We believe that digital technology will become an important force driving social development and making the world more inclusive and sustainable," said Guo Ping, Chairman of the Huawei Supervisory Board.
The Huawei DigiTruck project provides free digital skills training to people who most need it, including those who live in rural areas, the elderly, young people without jobs, women, and girls. A converted shipping container was used to build the DigiTruck, a mobile school that runs on solar power and has computers, smartphones, and 4G internet. It is mounted on a truck.
The Huawei ICT Academy is a second initiative to improve digital literacy, teaching university students about topics including 5G, cloud computing, and AI. Now, there are 1,900 Huawei ICT Academies servicing 150,000 students annually across 110 countries.
The goal of MTN's Skills Academy is to strengthen the connection between digital skill development and labour market demands in order to benefit digital technology creators, users, and consumers. The collaboration with Huawei aims to quicken efforts to reach even more isolated and rural populations and expand the range of training options for digital skills.
MTN is dedicated to growing its network to underserved communities and has set a target of 95% rural broadband coverage by 2025. A major portion of Africa's population lives in rural areas. MTN's collaboration with Huawei advances the company's mission. The company wants to increase the volume of partnerships and partnership models it now uses.
In order to provide remote and rural populations with inexpensive connection, MTN and Huawei are working together to implement RuralStar. With the completion of the first RuralStar proof-of-concept in the world in Ghana in 2017, the solution expands collaboration between the partners by removing traditional obstacles that render network access in such situations unprofitable for carriers.
In terms of lowering carbon emissions, Huawei will assist MTN in meeting its goal of going net zero by 2040 and minimising its environmental effect. In order to reduce carbon emissions, the partners will collaborate to decarbonize the operator's data centres, storage facilities, transport networks, and Radio Access Network (RAN) sites. A combination of energy-efficient technology and the use of cutting-edge green technologies will be used to achieve network decarbonization.
