According to the chipmaker, Qualcomm Inc. and Iridium Communications Inc. have teamed up to offer a satellite-based messaging service on high-end smartphones running Google's Android operating system.

The collaboration comes months after Apple Inc. revealed a feature that, in some nations, including the United States and Canada, enables iPhone 14 models to transmit emergency messages via satellite. Additionally, such phones have a Qualcomm chip that enables satellite communication in the absence of Wi-Fi or cellular data connections.

According to Qualcomm, the new service, Snapdragon Satellite, will be accessible in some areas beginning in the second half of 2023 on smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 mobile platform.

It noted that other products, such as laptops, cars, and tablets, might potentially be enabled for Snapdragon Satellite without mentioning if such devices would require any additional hardware.

Iridium's satellite network will receive communications transmitted through the service thanks to Qualcomm technology. The recipient or the emergency services will then be informed.

Manufacturer of GPS-based devices Garmin Ltd. will manage user access to emergency response services.
