As the American company tries to expand its automotive business, chip designer Qualcomm Inc said that it would acquire Israel's Autotalks Ltd, which produces chips used in technologies aimed at reducing vehicle crashes.

The number of chips used by automakers is skyrocketing due to the rise in electric vehicles and autonomous functions in automobiles, making the automotive business a crucial growth sector for chipmakers.

In order to increase road safety, Autotalks manufactures specialised chips for use in V2X communications technology for manned and driverless cars.

"We have been investing in V2X research, development and deployment since 2017 and believe that as the automotive market matures, a standalone V2X safety architecture will be needed for enhanced road user safety, as well as smart transportation systems," Nakul Duggal, senior vice-president - automotive, Qualcomm Technologies, added.

The "pipeline" for Qualcomm's automotive business was $30 billion last year, up more than $10 billion from a late-July disclosure.

The business had attributed the increase to the usage of its Snapdragon Digital Chassis by automakers and their suppliers. In-car infotainment, cloud networking, assisted and autonomous driving technologies can all be offered by the Snapdragon Digital Chassis.

Although Qualcomm promised to include Autotalks' products in its Snapdragon Digital Chassis product line, it made no mention of the deal's financial details.

According to Qualcomm, the transaction will be done through its subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies.
