Last month, Samsung Electronics and KDDI Research, Inc., the research institute of the Japanese telecom service provider KDDI, entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for collaborative research on the use of AI in future mobile communication networks.

With the advancement of 6G standardization and the growth of AI technology in various sectors, both companies seek to improve overall network performance by integrating AI into multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies. MIMO systems enhance transmission rates and broaden coverage by employing several antennas to send and receive signals.Unlike conventional MIMO systems that transmit data within a single-cell network, distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) systems utilize several cells to provide benefits like enhanced performance in coverage boundary regions and in the entire network.

By means of this partnership, the firms will investigate AI-based solutions to enhance the design and functionality of D-MIMO systems—facilitating greater transmission rates at the user level and improved capacity across the network.

“The collaborative study with KDDI Research will be crucial in advancing wireless telecommunications by merging telecommunications and AI technologies,” stated Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, CTO of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics and Head of Samsung Research. "We will spearhead the next-generation communication research aimed at enhancing user experience."

“I expect that our research partnership will underscore the vital importance of AI and D-MIMO in crafting a user-focused network that provides outstanding wireless quality throughout the target zone, ultimately generating new value in 6G,” stated Hajime Nakamura, President and CEO of KDDI Research, Inc.

Industry collaborations, such as the AI-RAN Alliance and the Next G Alliance (NGA), are crucial for advancing Samsung’s research on incorporating AI into communication technologies. In November 2024, Samsung organized the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit to promote enhanced cooperation within the industry. In addition to these collaborations and programs, the company published a 6G white paper last month detailing its vision for sustainable and AI-native communication technologies.
