Siemens Healthineers and Swedish medical imaging and cybersecurity firm Sectra have entered a partnership that looks to improve diagnostic workflows for radiologists.
The partnership will put Sectra's picture archiving and communication system (PACS) radiology applications into tandem with Siemens Healthineers' NAEOTOM Alpha photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) scanners. Through this union, radiologists will be able to view and post-process PCCT images in the Sectra system itself without going back and forth to other applications or workstations.
Sectra president and CEO Torbjörn Kronander emphasized the importance of streamlined workflows amid increasing workloads and a global shortage of radiologists. "Efficient workflows have never been more critical," Kronander stated.
He said: “Radiologists need access to all relevant images and tools in one application to work efficiently and make informed decisions. This cooperation is valuable for radiologists, as well as patients.”
Photon-counting CT is a cutting-edge imaging technique which truly counts and quantifies the energy of individual X-ray photons. The technology offers better contrast resolution, lower radiation doses, and the capability to discriminate tissue based on its material. Siemens Healthineers discussed the significance of the NAEOTOM scanner where high-definition visualizing is critical and where radiation exposure must be managed as a matter of utmost priority, such as in the treatment of children with cancer.
Nena Stephan, project lead for clinical insights and automation at Siemens Healthineers, commented: “Interactive spectral imaging with NAEOTOM Alpha datasets unlocks the full diagnostic potential within every photon-counting CT scan, empowering radiologists to make more confident and precise decisions by enabling the interactive and customisable visualisation of tissue spectral characteristics, providing functional information, and eliminating artefacts.”
Sectra has consistently expanded its collaborations. During December 2024, Sectra collaborated with Connecticut-based University of Hartford to provide its medical education platform to students of radiology. It continued to extend its partnership with Northern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse Nord RHF) with the inclusion of a digital pathology workflow module. The collaboration between Siemens Healthineers and Sectra is evidence of greater focus on maximizing diagnostic efficiency and enhancing patient care with advanced medical imaging technology.
