Defense Information Systems Agency has awarded Lumen Technologies a $223 million task order to provide secure, mission-critical communications services to the Department of Defense.
The DOD's novel Voice over Internet Protocol system, which is intended to do away with the need for desk phones and enable the department's transition to a hybrid working environment, will be supported by Lumen's modern hybrid-cloud and audio-conferencing services under the award, Lumen announced from Washington.
“The U.S. Department of Defense has a far-reaching mission to provide military forces to deter war and ensure our nation’s security,” said Zain Ahmed, senior vice president of Lumen’s public sector arm.
“The DOD is modernizing its network and leveraging cloud-based technologies like the new voice system enabled by Lumen that securely connects our troops with modern communications tools wherever they are,” he added.
Lumen's work aims to create an integrated phone system that can sustain over 250,000 simultaneous connections in order to expedite DOD communications services. It will function on Lumen's fiber-optic network.
On cloud data centres that adhere to DOD Impact Level 5 security standards, the improved phone and conferencing services will be housed. To better serve the needs of the warfighter, it will offer contemporary capabilities and scalable infrastructure.
These products will help the DOD with its transition to an upgraded 911 system at military facilities, which is expected to enhance the process of detecting and routing first responders to a caller's location and set up the system for the eventual transfer of pictures and videos.
The award has a base length of one year, three options with one-year terms, and a potential six-month extension. It was created as part of the $50 billion, 15-year Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions programme of the General Services Administration.
Several federal agencies are now receiving network services from Lumen. The company won a $1.5 billion contract in November 2022 to upgrade the network transport and communications infrastructure for the Indo-Pacific Command's operational area.
Lumen received a task order from the Department of Agriculture earlier that year for a unified wide area data transport service with secure remote access, contact centre, and cloud connectivity capabilities. The task order was valued at approximately $1.2 billion.
The business is safeguarding and updating the department's network services and information technology systems under a second $1.6 billion task order given by the Department of the Interior in January 2020.
