Toyota Motor Corporation has launched its new fuel cell technology, the third-generation fuel cell system (3rd Gen FC System), representing an important advancement towards a hydrogen-powered future. The updated system is intended for various applications, encompassing commercial vehicles, passenger cars, and fixed power solutions like generators, rail transport, and ships.
The 3rd Gen FC System provides improved fuel efficiency, resulting in a longer cruising range for passenger cars, enhancing their reliability. For commercial trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, it offers diesel-like resilience alongside higher power production. The system's small design facilitates simpler integration into various vehicle types. Toyota has concentrated on enhancing this fuel cell system for commercial uses by increasing its durability compared to earlier models and making it maintenance-free. Moreover, it enhances fuel efficiency by 20%, increasing driving range while greatly lowering expenses through innovative cell design and efficient manufacturing processes.
The 3rd Generation FC System is scheduled for market launch in Japan, Europe, North America, and China beginning in 2026. Toyota will present the technology for the first time on February 19 at the H2 & FC EXPO (International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo) in Tokyo, Japan.
Dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality, Toyota persists in investing in hydrogen solutions, working alongside industry partners to foster innovation in hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and usage. This recent development strengthens Toyota’s vision for a future powered by hydrogen with more sustainable mobility options.
