The US and India have declared donations exceeding USD 2 million for collaborative research initiatives focused on enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies to benefit society. The US Embassy stated that the announcement was made at an event led by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technologies Seth Center, and Indian Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, among other high-ranking officials.
A sum of nearly USD 120,000 each will be awarded to a total of 17 projects, with 11 dedicated to AI and 6 to quantum technologies. These initiatives focus on addressing important social problems, such as utilizing AI for early cancer detection and improving quantum computing technology. The grant competition is a component of the larger US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
Moreover, the two nations announced a new USD 1 million USISTEF grant for backing collaborative research on advanced materials and critical minerals. The press release announced that this program intends to enhance partnership among researchers from universities, national labs, and the private sector in both the US and India.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), US Ambassador Eric Garcetti wrote, "I was honored to join Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and Dr Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology, to celebrate US and Indian innovators working at the cutting edge of AI and quantum technology! The US-India Science & Technology Endowment Fund is fueling partnerships to develop and commercialize critical and emerging technology as we build a brighter tomorrow."
