The Biden administration committed more than $80 million in funding in an effort to boost American solar panel production, expand access to solar energy, and find better replacements for silicon-based solar panels, which are now the industry standard.

The Community Solar initiative, led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), covers a number of solutions where tenants and persons without authority over their rooftops can still obtain solar energy for their electricity needs. The greatest community solar initiative in the history of the United States was unveiled by Vice President Kamala Harris two weeks ago, according to the administration.

Currently, it plans to invest $52 million in 19 solar projects spread over 12 states, with $10 million coming from the infrastructure law and $30 million going towards technologies that would make it easier to incorporate solar energy into the grid.

Additionally, the DOE chose 25 teams to take part in a $10 million competition that aims to expedite the efforts of solar developers engaged in community solar project development.

The Inflation Reduction Act already provides incentives, such as renewable energy tax credits, to construct huge solar power installations. The extra funding, according to Ali Zaidi, White House national climate adviser, is focused on helping more areas while still achieving the country's climate goals.

"It's lifting up our workers and our communities. And that's, I think, what really excites us about this work," Zaidi said. "It's a chance not just to tackle the climate crisis, but to bring economic opportunity to every zip code of America."

According to Becca Jones-Albertus, director of the energy department's Solar Energy Technologies Office, the investments would lower people's electricity costs and increase the electricity grid's dependability, security, and resilience in the face of climate change.
