At the 32nd ICT Business Awards & DQ Digital Leadership Conclave, Electronics and Information Technology, Union Minister of Ashwini Vaishnaw urged Indian IT giants to come up with a mobile operating system designed for the country. Speaking to top industry executives of TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, Vaishnaw urged them to move away from service-based offerings to innovate and design new products.
"I urge our leading tech companies, such as Infosys, TCS, and Wipro, to accept this challenge and create a mobile operating system for our nation," Vaishnaw said. "You've excelled in providing services, but now is the time for India to become a product-driven nation. The government is fully prepared to support you in this endeavor."
Focusing on the government's vision to make India a global leader in technology, Vaishnaw underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dedication to nurturing innovation. "Prime Minister Modi has instilled us with the confidence, vision, and resources to think big," he added. "We need not only to solve today's problems but also set the ground for emerging technologies that can place India among the world's top five technology powers—a 'T5' equal to the G7 or G20."
Vaishnaw also emphasized the attempts by the government to democratize artificial intelligence (AI) and establish India as a leader in this area. He stated that five semiconductor production facilities are under development, and the first "Made in India" chip is expected to be released this year.
In a significant boost for AI development, the minister revealed the launch of an AI Compute Portal. This portal will provide researchers, startups, and government bodies access to advanced GPUs and high-performance computing resources. "Yesterday, we launched a shared compute facility equipped with 14,000 GPUs," Vaishnaw said. "This facility will empower researchers, students, and startups to test AI models, refine algorithms, and build world-class applications. Our goal is clear: within the next 12 months, we aim to develop our own foundational AI models."
Looking forward, Vaishnaw sketched out the government's technology plan as part of its 2047 vision. He said the government's third term would concentrate on creating independent AI models, creating niche AI solutions, producing domestic GPUs, promoting startups, and developing talent. With these ambitious plans, the government plans to make India a global technology leader and the country a digital innovation leader in the world.
