Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc, a leading medical technology company worldwide, revealed it has finalized a deal to purchase OrthoGrid Systems, Inc., a private medical technology company specializing in AI-powered surgical guidance systems for total hip replacement surgeries. The purchase comprises OrthoGrid's Hip AI® platform, along with two other orthopedic applications and more than 40 patents, all powered by artificial intelligence and fluoroscopy.

Surgical guidance systems frequently depend on CT imaging, leading to a build-up of CT exams which can affect the efficiency and workflow of the operating room (OR). Fluoroscopy-assisted surgical guidance is a method that utilizes live X-ray imaging to assist in procedures and enhance surgical precision and safety. Fluoroscopy systems do not need preoperative preparation, offer real-time navigation with current images, and offer convenient bedside access to motion imaging, unlike CT scans.

"OrthoGrid's AI systems address the rapidly growing market demand for fluoroscopy-based surgical guidance solutions while strengthening our portfolio of hip offerings that drive intraoperative efficiencies and improve the quality of life for patients," said Jim Lancaster, President, Recon and Global Headquarters Executive Director at Zimmer Biomet.

OrthoGrid's Hip AI system analyzes images in real-time, automatically measures leg length and offset, and offers guidance on ideal cup placement, all within a compact OR space. Furthermore, surgeons have the option to customize Hip AI to match their individual method and process.
