ISRO Completes 100th Rocket Mission with Navigation Satellite

The Indian Space Exploration Association (ISRO) today accomplished its 100th rocket mission from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh by successfully deploying a second-generation navigation satellite. The NVS-02 is the second satellite in the NVS series, and part of India's Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). This constellation is designed with 7 satellites as well as a network of ground stations working in a 24-hour cycle.

The satellite was set in the orbit aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) at 6:23 am on Wednesday.

“I am extremely happy to announce that the first launch of this year has been successfully accomplished with the GSLV-F15 precisely placing the NVS-02 satellite into the intended orbit. This mission is our 100th launch from here. This is a significant milestone for our space programme,” ISRO chairman V Narayanan said.

With this launch, ISRO has placed in orbit 548 satellites weighing 120 tons over the most recent 46 years. Of this, 433 satellites weighing 23 tons were from other countries. Going ahead, Narayanan told the media that the space organization plans to build its ability and launch 200 missions in the next five years.

The ISRO chairman added that today there are many applications for the NavIC. “Strategic uses such as tracking of shipping vessels, time synchronization, train tracking and safety of alert life dissemination can be accomplished using NavIC,” he said. The constellation will also empower India to rely on its own data and improve terrestrial, aerial, and maritime navigation helping sectors such as agriculture and disaster management.
