A pioneer in K–12 next-generation learning solutions, Savvas Learning Company, has announced the acquisition of Whooo's Reading and its AI-driven technology, which enables teachers to quickly and simply assess if their pupils are understanding the books they are reading.

"Artificial intelligence technology has the power to transform K-12 education by dramatically helping to personalize the teaching and learning experience," said Bethlam Forsa, CEO of Savvas Learning Company. "The AI-driven technology that supports Whooo's Reading is a great example of this. It gives students personalized and adaptive feedback on their writing and reading skills, empowering them to grow as learners. It also provides teachers with valuable insights into which skills their students need extra support with, allowing them to customize instruction."

The National Science Foundation-funded AI technology behind Whooo's Reading gives students immediate feedback on their written responses to open-ended critical thinking questions about the material they are reading, allowing them to practise their reading comprehension skills. With the help of its in-house machine learning system, which automatically grades student writing, teachers can differentiate instruction while also saving time and receiving actionable information about the strengths and weaknesses of their students.

Whooo's Reading CEO and President Raphael Menko expressed his excitement about joining Savvas, which shares his company's philosophy of funding the advancement of AI technology for the benefit of students.

"Savvas is an innovative organization that is committed to creating high-quality personalized learning solutions," Menko said. "We've always wanted to impact more students. We're thrilled now to be able to expand the reach of this incredible technology and impact the millions of students who use Savvas products."

The AI technology that powers Whooo's Reading was created to combine with a vast quantity of content and was designed to work with every book that a student might read and any question a teacher could ask pupils.

"We are excited to integrate this machine-learning technology into our portfolio of curriculum products to further support educators in providing advanced personalized learning for their students," Forsa said. "This powerful AI-driven technology will enable Savvas to provide teachers the next-generation of time-saving scoring tools, along with reports to help them better understand which skills their students are struggling with and mastering."
