Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the subsequent stage of India’s ambitious artificial intelligence (AI) mission, concentrating on developing fundamental AI models suited to the nation’s distinct cultural and linguistic environment. The government is also greatly enhancing its computing capabilities by enlisting almost twice the originally intended Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for AI advancement.

"I am very happy to say that, against 10,000 GPUs, we have actually empanelled 18,693 GPUs," Vaishnaw announced. This includes 12,896 Nvidia H100s and 1,480 Nvidia H200s, some of the most powerful GPUs available. "Overall, the net high-end GPUs we have is 15,000," he added, noting that even a model like DeepSeek was trained on just 2,000 GPUs. Roughly 10,000 of these GPUs are available today.

Vaishnaw highlighted the significance of available computing power for startups, researchers, and academia, describing it as "the most crucial aspect of the mission." These resources will be utilized for developing AI models, distillation methods, and formulating new algorithms.

The second primary focus of the mission is the creation of homegrown foundational models. Vaishnaw clarified that the second major goal of the India AI initiative was to create an AI model. "We have now developed the framework that will be introduced today." We invite proposals to create our own foundational models that take into account the Indian context, Indian languages, and cultural aspects of our nation, aiming to eliminate biases. "Where the datasets, concerning our nation and our people – that process will begin today."
