OpenAI said at its first developer conference that it would allow ChatGPT users to create customized bots to fulfill certain jobs, and that it has reduced the cost of more powerful models for developers. The upgrades were announced by CEO Sam Altman during the San Francisco event, which drew 900 developers from across the world. This is OpenAI's newest attempt to capitalize on ChatGPT's success by providing developers with incentives to build in its ecosystem. Altman claims that ChatGPT, which debuted in November 2022, already has 100 million weekly active users.

OpenAI is also pushing for more AI agent-like features to handle personal and work tasks when commanded by a human without close supervision. It will launch a GPT Store later this month where people can share their GPTs - OpenAI's version of agents that will allow ChatGPT to book flights and perform other tasks - and earn money based on the number of users, as per economic times.

"GPTs will continue to get more useful and smarter, and you'll eventually be able to let them take on real tasks in the real world," OpenAI wrote in a blog on Monday.

"We think it's important to move incrementally towards this future, as it will require careful technical and safety work - and time for society to adapt."

Even before event registrants were able to check in at 8:30 a.m. PDT, hundreds had formed a queue around the block in downtown San Francisco's Mid-Market area. Most were developers who were already utilizing OpenAI technology and were anxious for improvements.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a quick, unexpected presence at the conference, emphasizing his commitment to the relationship with OpenAI and his support for the costly race to construct basic models.
